HARARE - At least 20 schools from across the country will converge at Prince Edward School Wednesday afternoon for the annual Sprint Challenge athletics meet.

Participants will compete in six categories namely 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M, 1500M and 4x100M relay for the age groups Under-12 to Under-18.

Prince Edward sports director, Sebastian Garikai said: "We are geared to host the event and our athletes are ready.”

Some of the schools that will compete this afternoon include Allan Wilson, Lomagundi, Peterhouse, Heritage Girls High and Queen Elizabeth.

Mabelreign Girls High, Gateway, St John's College, St George's College, Arundel School, Mufakose High and Chisipite will also be present at the meet.

St George are the defending champions in the boys category after coming first last year with 177 points followed by Gateway who 171 points in second place.

In the girls category, Arundel are the title holders after finishing last year’s event with 180 points while Chisipite were second with 170 points.

"It is an annual invitational event. But it is sort of a season-opener for us because some schools might have already started their competitions. This will be a good platform for us to select athletes for the Zone VI games," Garikai said.

"It is the first athletics event we hold and we need to see where we are and how we are doing."
