EDITOR — There is joy and ululation among the majority of commuting public from Zengeza and St Mary’s to Harare following the return of Kukura Kurerwa Bus Company which has resumed operations along the City-Chitungwiza route.
KK as Kukura Kurerwa Bus Company is popularly known by the people of Chitungwiza is charging a flat fee of 50 cents or 5 Rand for a trip to or from Harare while the fifteen-seater commuter omnibuses have no flat figure.
Fifteen seater commuter omnibuses charge one dollar for the trip but usually increase the fare during the evening peak hours to $1,50 or $2 when it’s raining.
Commuters are happy that they will be able to manage better and monitor their transport budget in this harsh economic environment.
Commuters have urged KK to increase the number of buses plying the route while some are calling other bus companies which used to ply the City-Chitungwiza route to return.
The return of KK will enable the majority of low income earners the opportunity to sit on seats than being forced to sit on hot the “Kadoma” (place behind drivers’ seat) in the kombis where they pay 5 rand.
Kukura Kurerwa used to ply City-Zengeza-St Mary’s route in the late 1990’s and early 2000 but stopped plying the routes when the country’s economic woes climaxed in 2005.
During the late 1990’s and early 2000, there were no kombis plying the City-Zengeza-St mary’s route but they only surfaced when the country was dollarised in 2009.
