HARARE - African Boxing Union champion Charles Manyuchi won the World Boxing Championship (WBC) welterweight title after handing Ghanaian boxer Patrick Allotey the first defeat of his career and it came via an eighth round technical knockout (TKO) on Saturday evening in Lusaka, Zambia.
Allotey was punished in the fourth round with points deduction for breaking boxing rules ranging from holding, pushing to punching in the back of the head, the same punishment which was handed to both boxers in the eighth round.
The Zimbabwean dominated the fight and won the bout without any controversy. At one moment the Ghanaian protested after the referee Sylvia Mokaida stopped the fight after Allotey went down to the canvas without being hit or pushed.
“I will make Zimbabwe proud, they will have a world champion,” Manyuchi told the Daily News before the event.
Manyuchi is contracted to Zambia-based Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions and for the past year he has been staging his fights in Lusaka.
Meanwhile Zambia’s Cathrine Phiri also won in the World Boxing Union (WBC) Women’s bantamweight Silver title after beating her German opponent Pia Mazelanik.
It took Phiri just three rounds to win the title as she sent the German boxer to the canvas four times in the second and third rounds.
