HARARE - Suspended ZBC chief executive officer Happison Muchechetere has reportedly been summoned by police for questioning over the $1 million scandal involving the purchase of a radio Outside Broadcasting (OB) van from a Chinese firm.

Highly-placed sources told the Daily News yesterday that Muchechetere had been summoned to report to the Serious Fraud Squad in Harare this morning.

He might be charged with allegedly inflating to $1 050 000 an OB Van worth between $100 000 and $200 000 bought last year from China National Instruments Imports and Exports Corporation (Instrimpex).

Muchechetere’s mobile was unreachable for comment yesterday.

But informed police and government officials confirmed he will face questioning today at the Serious Fraud Squad.

The Daily News understands some of the top management at the State broadcaster have already been questioned by police over the $1 million scam.

It is not clear if the cash-strapped ZBC forked out the whole cash for the van but information at hand showed that the ZBC, through a deal with a local bank, paid $100 000 and the van was delivered.

Officials at ZBC now fear that either the balance was paid to the Chinese company and the difference of $900 000 was shared between Muchechetere and Instrimpex officials.
