HARARE - With the election silly season over, it is time now to press upon those elected into office at Zifa to move on from the business of politicking and finally come to the business of governing Zimbabwean football.
The election period in Zimbabwean football was quite a roller coaster ride, and phew, what a busy last couple of months and drama we witnessed!
To the winner of the Zifa presidential race Cuthbert Dube and his new national board; congratulations.
Take a day to celebrate, and then get over it. It’s time to get to work.
Commiserations to the gallant losers, you fought a good fight, based on good principles that you set yourself and admirably adhered to. Yes, take time to feel sorry for yourself, and then move on too.
While Dube won emphatically, he also has to acknowledge that there was a significant number among the electorate, and even more so among the generality of the Zimbabwean football-loving public, who strongly felt time was up for him to pass on the baton.
But in a democracy, the winner of an election rules over everyone and decisions made by these leaders impact directly on all.
And in his new term, Dube should see himself as being in an adventurous position than in his first term.
He has a wonderful opportunity to build on some of the successes of his first term in office, and learn from the mistakes of the past. He will enjoy the benefit of tapping into the election manifestos of his rivals, who all had brilliant ideas to take Zimbabwean football to the next level.
Ever the astute politician, Dube has already reportedly offered to work with his challengers for the greater good of the game. Just how that will play out remains to be seen.
