JOHANNESBURG - The dismal failure by southern African clubs to do well in continental competitions is a serious concern for the regional body.
As part of their efforts to remedy the situation, the Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) plans to introduce a new competition similar to the Champions League.
It will be played during the pre-season, with all 14 Cosafa member countries participating, to help improve the standard of the game in southern Africa.
The tournament will also be used to introduce players to international football.
Cosafa bosses are also disappointed that not one of their member countries have qualified for the World Cup in Brazil.
“We are concerned that clubs in the region are usually eliminated in the preliminary rounds when it comes to the two competitions,” said Cosafa’s COO Sue Destombes.
The competitions are the money-spinning African Champions League and Confederation Cup, which are played between February and November.
“The new competition will have big cash prizes. The tournament will be hosted by South Africa for the first few years. Full details about the tournament will be announced at a later stage,” said Destombes.
On Cosafa not being represented at the World Cup in Brazil, Cosafa president Suketu Patel said: “It’s something we are not happy about, but we hope it will change soon.” – Sunday Times
