HARARE - Veteran writer Sharai Mukonoweshuro who died on Sunday at the age of 74 has been described as Zimbabwe’s “pioneer in literature about women’s issues” by the Zimbabwe Writers Association (Zwa).
Zwa, which brings together several Zimbabwean writers’ organisations and individual authors, mourned the veteran author who succumbed to cancer in a statement released by the organisation’s secretary-general Tinashe Muchuri.
“She is best known for her novels Akafuratidzwa Moyo, Ndakagara Ndazviona and Ndakakutadzirei? which dwell meticulously on the precarious position that women occupy in our community,” said Muchuri.
“Her work awakened us, for instance, to some of the excruciating moments that women go through in marriage.
“She often worked on the underlying conflicts between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. She led us into experiencing what it feels when people make the woman feel like she is in the wrong place,” read part of the statement.
Burial arrangements for the late story teller, who is survived by her husband David, six children and 14 grandchildren, were still to be finalised at the time of going to press.
The celebrated author, a pastor with ZAOGA at the time of her death, is being mourned at 280 North Way, Prospect in Harare.
