Can these men (and woman) be trusted with our game?

HARARE - The latest storm in Zimbabwean cricket, which has caused so much outrage in the sport, has called into question the calibre of the people at the helm of the game in this country, and it’s a sorry list.

Tragically, against that, we are all powerless and at the mercy of the regime.

The most depressing thing is that the decisions being made by this lot ultimately affects everyone and have significant bearing on the future of the game.

One such decision is the rejection by the ZC board of an ICC bailout offer, further proof to anyone remotely interested in the game that we are screwed as a cricket nation.

You know you are in serious trouble as a national sport when you have a board that is a liability other than an asset, a board with people who should rather be anywhere else than a cricket board.

All due respect, shouldn’t Mainos Mudukuti be working on trying to win the Zanu-PF primary elections next time following his defeat in Masvingo North last year than formulating cricket policy on the ZC board?

Shouldn’t Mudukuti’s party colleague, Freddy Kapuya, resign from the ZC board after he was elected mayor of Redcliff at last year’s national elections?

I don’t know what the ZC constitution says about the presence of politicians in the structures of the game. Perhaps the constitution is silent on that one, but would a top official from the MDC or any another political party be allowed to sit on that ZC board?

Doesn’t something seem wrong that Esther Lupepe is still a top ZC employee in the finance department even after she was elevated to be a board member?

How does she report to the same board that she sits on and make policy decisions? How independent is she?

Talking of independence, how independent is ZC’s election nomination court seeing that it is chaired by Wellington Pasipanodya, a partner of ZC vice-chairman Wilson Manase’s law firm?

How did the nomination court come to the decision of rejecting the candidature of the well-respected former vice-chairman of ZC Tawengwa Mukuhlani when two board posts were filled in February?

Isn’t it time cricketers claim their game back?
