HARARE - Dynamos secretary-general Webster Chikengezha says the most puzzling thing about the amount of pressure being brought to bear on coach Calisto Pasuwa is that the defending champions are actually in a “better position” at this stage of the season than they were at the same time last year.
Chikengezha made the remarks yesterday after an emergency club meeting, which he said had been convened to “clear the air” around media speculation over Pasuwa’s future.
Club bosses emerged from the meeting throwing weight behind the three-time title-winning coach and said the club’s fortunes would nosedive if he was to be fired.
“We were just clearing the air on what you guys have been writing in the papers,” Chikengezha told the Daily News after yesterday’s meeting, attended by board members, executive committee members, the coach and senior players.
“The whole family met today and we stuck together. The position has never been contrary to the current position, which is that the coach is staying. Never at any given point did we say the coach was going.”
Last season, Dynamos won their third Castle Premiership title in succession, shaking off a slow start to the season in which their opening six matches all ended in draws. After the same number of games this term, Dynamos have won three and lost three, lying eighth on the standings and just three points behind leaders Highlanders.
“We are actually better off than we were at the same time last season,” Chikengezha added. “Last season we had six points after six games, this season we have nine.
“The fans must look at that. We are calling on fans to be patient, results will come. We are champions and everyone wants to beat the champions. But we would want to win every game we play, but remember we are also playing with other teams. Everyone wants to win, the coaches, the players, us; people must think about that when we lose.”
Chikengezha insisted the Glamour Boys were still on course to win a fourth title on the trot, and additional silverware on offer for the rest of the season.
“When the season started we wanted to win everything, that is still the goal. Unfortunately we’ve already lost the Independence Cup, but everything else on offer going forward we intend to win.”
