HARARE - The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) has named an enlarged provisional squad for the Under-19 Car African Championships set for Botswana during the weekend of August 26 and 28.

The Young Sables are aiming to make amends for last year’s poor performance in Nelspruit, South Africa, where they lost 29-20 to Kenya in the semi-final to see their hopes of returning to the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy go up in smoke.

However, this year the Young Sables technical team insists they will pull all the stops to have the teenagers ready for the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy qualifier.

They have made their intentions clear by including a host of former schoolboys now plying their trade at universities in South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Amongst the UK based contingent vying for a final place in the Young Sables squad are prop Tapiwa Muringani, flank Daniel Moolman and flyhalf Brandon Mandivenga.

St John’s College have a heavy presence in the provisional squad in wing Zawadi Mayeka, centre Shane Snarter, lock Eli Snyman, flank Wade Michelle.

St George’s College, Prince Edward and Churchill are also well represented in the 57-man squad.

“We have included some of the players from last year and we were also selecting at the Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival from all teams that played,” said team manager Blessing Chiutare.

“We have players playing outside Zimbabwe who we have been monitoring, who are playing at junior club teams, colleges and varsities. We have footages of the games these players played.”
