HARARE - Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai returned to work yesterday after a week-long absence due to health scares.
Tsvangirai, 62, met top officials at Harvest House, the MDC headquarters.
He was briefly admitted to a top-notch Harare hospital for a battery of tests after his condition deteriorated and had a follow up exam to assess the status of his health.
He had to cancel all his domestic engagements, including an Africa Day rally appearance, and one of his foreign trips, and was forced to work from home, officials said.
He has been heading off swirling speculation about his alleged serious health complications, saying he was resting at his Highlands home.
The former premier has been paying intermittent visits into the city for observation by his doctors.
Press reports suggested he was hospitalised on Tuesday last week, reportedly suffering from “mental” and “nervous” breakdown, allegations he strenuously rejected.
Last week, he and his wife Elizabeth opened doors to their Highlands home to the media, with Elizabeth, who has of late assumed a low profile, claiming that her husband was fine.
Soon after his arrival at Harvest House headquarters, Tsvangirai held a meeting with his spin-doctors Luke Tamborinyoka and Douglas Mwonzora, had a meeting with his advisors, attended meetings with his top team, besides scheduling a working dinner with some officials.
He was reportedly greeted by cheers and a standing ovation by senior staffers.
Tsvangirai was said to be thrilled to be back at the office.
“He is sounding terrific, upbeat and raring to go,” said an official close to his office.
“He has been looking forward to getting back to the office.”
