HARARE - Zimbabwe's women football team yesterday went on strike demanding outstanding dues, disrupting preparations for weekend’s African Women Championships return leg qualifier in Zambia.
The players staged a sit-in during camp at Zifa Village in Mount Hampden yesterday.
The Mighty Warriors lost the first leg 1-0 in Harare a week ago, and will be hoping to turn the tables in Lusaka on Sunday.
But failure by Zifa to pay the players their outstanding dues in match fees, allowances and bonus might result in the players refusing to travel.
Cuthbert Dube’s Zifa-led administration has come under increasing pressure to step down following the men’s national side’s preliminary round elimination from the African Nations Cup qualifiers last weekend, and the latest Mighty Warriors industrial action will further swell that pressure.
Women’s rights group have previously slammed Zifa for their treatment of the national women’s team, which is often subjected to deplorable camping conditions, substandard food and low pay.
Zifa officials were not reachable for comment yesterday.
