HARARE - The Zimbabwe International Film Festival (ZIFF), which will run from October 4 to 11, will this year be held in several cities in addition to the usual hosts Harare.
ZIFF, whose theme this year is “Universal African”, will be held in Bulawayo, Harare, Masvingo, Mutare, Norton and Chitungwiza.
“We will take the festival to these cities and also to high density suburbs in Harare and Bulawayo,” said Nigel Munyati, a founding trustee of the festival.
“We are committed to creating opportunities for aspiring filmmakers in marginalised areas, so ZIFF will take films to the people and give them the opportunity to interact with international film stars and filmmakers.
“Venue details will be announced in due course.”
Munyati, who is also a respected football administrator, added that the theme for the 2014 edition is meant to celebrate African cinema while at the same time recognising filmmakers from the continent who have excelled on the global stage.
Local film personalities who will be honoured for breaking into the film scene of other countries include the United States of America-based duo of Danai Gurira and Tongai Arnold Chirisa as well as Leroy Gopal who has excelled in neighbouring South Africa.
Just like they did last year, ZIFF will be holding the festival in partnership with the Zimbabwe German Society (ZGS).
“As in 2013, we will collaborate with Goethe Institut to bring a diverse range of films for screening during the Festival.
“This year ZIFF will secure the full participation of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) and other prospective television stations, to ensure that they appreciate the broad range of content they can bring to their television channels.
According to Munyati, there will be a Short Film Programme under which selected local emerging filmmakers in script writing, directing and editing will be conducted by various experts.
“The completed films will be shown at the Festival during the Culture Night.
“The seasoned mentors will also conduct filmmaking workshops and be resource persons during the Film Forum and various outreach activities,” he said.
