HARARE - Jonathan Moyo, the minister of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services, has remained mum on his Monday meeting with President Robert Mugabe.

Moyo yesterday refused to talk to journalists when he toured the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed British American Tobacco (BAT) company in Harare.

Journalists were turned away by a ministry official.
“I am sorry to inform you at such short notice that the tour is no longer open to the media,” the ministry official said.

Official sources told the Daily News that Moyo papered over his differences with Mugabe during Monday’s closed door meeting, culminating in the minister attending a high-level government meeting at Munhumutapa offices on Tuesday.

This was after Moyo was on Friday subjected to an unrestrained attack by Mugabe who equated him to “a devil incarnate” and a “weevil” during the funeral wake of nationalist and former cabinet minister Nathan Shamuyarira, who died at West End Hospital last week.

On Saturday, Mugabe took the attack a notch higher at the National Heroes Acre, warning the minister against using the State media to widen divisions in Zanu PF.

The 90-year-old leader also indicated that the 57-year-old must stop sacking loyal editors at State newspapers and replacing them with opposition campaigners.

He had earlier been grilled about the mandate of the Independent Media Panel of Inquiry (Impi) probing the state of the media.
