HARARE - The Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (Buz)’ tenure is set to come to an end on December 29 when the association hold its congress to elect a new board tasked to lead Zimbabwean basketball for the next four years.
The positions of president and competitions president, technical president, secretary general, athletes’ commission, women and youth commission will all be contested.
Buz outgoing competitions manager Simon Lawson yesterday said all nominations for aspiring candidates where currently undergoing routine checks from the elections committee.
“In September, Buz served a notice to all provinces that they had opened up the election process,” Lawson said.
“Before November 29 all aspiring candidates should have submitted their CVs and declaration forms which shows whether one is Zimbabwean and if their have a criminal record.
“In line with the constitution, the last 30 days before the congress gives the elections committee time to go through the nominations as well as check their legality.
“The convenor of elections will announce the nominees 48 hours before the congress.”
The former St Johns College coach added that the posts which will not have been subscribed or whose nominees would have been disqualified on legal grounds will see the posts being opened up at the Buz congress.
“That will mean the posts will nominated at the congress during its proceedings but the nominations will obviously have to meet the criteria,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe will no longer host the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) Module One course that had been set to start today and end on December 22.
“Fiba notified us that the instructor failed get a flight ticket on time. So that module won’t go on,” Lawson said.
“But what will definitely be on is the Fiba Module Two Young Coaches Diploma starting on December 25 running up to January 4.”
Zimbabwe basketball will be hoping for better fortunes next year after an indifferent 2013 season characterised by ups and downs.
One of the local games highest points was when the Zimbabwe women national basketball team qualified for the Africa Nations Cup dubbed Afro-basket for the first time despite limited funding.
