HARARE - Zimbabwe Cricket convenor of selectors Givemore Makoni has come under heavy criticism from cricket fans following a shocking tirade against cricketer Robertson Chinyengetere on a Facebook forum.
Makoni’s rant came after he was invited by the administrator of the ZimCricket Talks page to explain why players from Takashinga Cricket Club, where Makoni is a founding member, seemed to get preferential treatment in national representative teams selection.
As tempers flared up, the chief selector got personal with Chinyengetere after the former Masvingo Sports Club and Southern Rocks batsman took him to task over his statement that Takashinga players had always merited their selection.
The long-serving administrators branded the law graduate “mad” and a “failed lawyer”, chiding him for living off his wife because he was lazy.
But despite overwhelmingly disapproving comments from followers of the page, Makoni continued to with his verbal onslaught seemingly undeterred, even challenging some of the cricketers criticising him on the thread to show the same aggression on the cricket field.
Most comments accompanying the thread suggest Makoni had lost his moral standing and should step down from his position as head of national selectors.
Kudakwashe Maynard Manyowa wrote: “If Mr Makoni's statements are a reflection of his leadership style and skill, then it all too clear why our cricket is a sinking ship. I have personally seen leaders put to the sword on social media, the likes of David Cameron, Obama, even Sepp Blatter on twitter, and Facebook.
“But never have I seen even one of them act like a thug, and wipe the floor with someone's personal life, doing so with such a bravado and enthusiasm. Even Morgan Tsvangirai, for all his shortcomings, and unintelligent mouth is yet to "pull down his pants" for all to see! At least not on social media?”
Added Joe Ruzvidzo: “Ah ya. Givemore Makoni, you failed cricketer who cried racism when your credentials were questioned. Why are you like this? Is it because you were never actually good enough, and you know it, but prefer to blame ‘the system at the time’ for your lack of success? Comrade, that's how a personal attack feels like. Maybe next time learn to engage in debate without getting personal.”
Kuda Gambe said: “Regai Taibu azoti ZC (No wonder Taibu says) is an old hut which has been repainted. Farayi Chikuni remarked: “iyi haiperi (we haven’t head the last of this) Maiden Drive (ZC headquarters) must respond and issue an apology. In the big nations the idiot would not be allowed to even speak he would have been fired already or suspended. It shows how uneducated and classless the person is.”
