HARARE - A Bindura woman who reportedly stole her husband’s ATM card and made withdrawals amounting to $9 160 was yesterday hauled before the courts.

Fiona Samson, 27, of Matiya homestead in Bindura appeared before Harare magistrate Donald Ndirowei facing theft charges.

She was remanded to July 25 on $250 bail.

Prosecutor Farai Gatsi alleged that Samson was married to Godfrey Chindito from January 2012 to May this year.

During that period, Samson hatched a plan to steal money from Chindito’s Cabs bank account. Samson managed to access Chindito’s pin for his Cabs ATM card. Between November and May this year, Samson would occasionally steal the ATM card and make cash withdrawals at various Cabs branches in Harare and Bindura.

The court heard that Samson would then return the ATM card without Chindito noticing.
On May 1, Samson tried to withdraw cash from Chindito’s bank account and the card was withheld by the ATM machine.

This prompted the bank personnel to alert Chindito, who informed the bank personnel that he was not the one who had performed the transaction.

Chindito was shown a CCTV video footage and realised that his wife was the one who had used the card.

He then requested a bank statement which reflected various cash withdrawals amounting to $9 160 which had been effected by Samson.

Chindito reported the matter to the police, leading to Samson’s arrest.
