HARARE - With only two games before the 2014 Castle Premiership season reaches the halfway mark, there is an unfamiliar look at the top of the log standings.
Traditional powerhouses of Zimbabwean football, Highlanders, Dynamos and CAPS United, occupy the top three places on the log respectively.
Bosso, who beat army side Black Rhinos 3-1 at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday, lead the log standings with 24 points from 13 matches.
It was the Bulawayo giants’ first win after a run of three games without a victory that had seen them fall off the pace at the top.
Kelvin Kaindu’s men had drawn with FC Platinum and Triangle before falling to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of their rivals Dynamos.
The win over Black Rhinos at the weekend, however, ensured that the Bulawayo giants regain pole position on the log.
Highlanders have generally done well at Barbourfields this season where they have won four of the six matches they have played there.
The only time they have dropped points at their home ground was when they drew with Hwange and FC Platinum.
Bosso are also averaging 2.33 goals per game at home.
It is their away form that should have Kaindu worried because Bosso have only been abale to pick up two wins on the seven occasions they have been away.
Those two wins came when Highlanders beat Chiredzi FC 3-0 at Chishamiso Stadium and Buffaloes 3-1 at Sakubva Stadium.
Highlanders’ scoring ratio away from home also drastically declines to 1.29 per match.
As the season heads towards the second round, scoring and picking maximum points away from home will be Kaindu’s main concern.
It has been eight years since the Bulawayo giants last won the league title and with the looks of things they have a good shot this season if only they can address these shortcomings mentioned above.
Defending champions Dynamos are in second place on 23 points just one behind Highlanders.
Calisto Pasuwa’s men played out a goalless with Chicken Inn on Saturday at Barbourfields.
The Glamour Boys have generally found the going tough when they take on the Gamecocks in Bulawayo and they are probably happy with the point gained on the road.
Hitting the back of the net has been DeMbare’s main weakness this season and that ailment came to the fore at the weekend.
With a little bit of sharpness upfront, Dynamos should have emerged from Barbourfields with maximum points but they had to settle for a draw.
With 11 goals from 13 matches, Dynamos have outscored only two teams in the division and that is the struggling Black Rhinos (7) and bottom-placed Chiredzi (8).
The Harare giants have compensated that lack of goals with a mean defence that has only conceded six goals thus far.
This is the best defence in the league and if they can maintain those high standards, DeMbare can win a four league title on a row.
CAPS are in third place on the log with a similar number of points as DeMbare but trail only on goal difference.
Consistency had been Makepekepe’s main weakness this season but coach Taurai Mangwiro has been to muster a run of three straight wins.
On Sunday, the Green Machine had to come from behind to beat former log leaders Hwange 2-1 at the National Sports Stadium.
The Harare derby is just around the corner and United’s recent resurgence will surely be tested to the maximum when they take on a Dynamos side they have failed to beat in a league match since 2008.
