MUTARE - Seven Mutare youth groups have teamed up to form a 40-member interdenominational choir called Power to Worship.
The multi-genre choral group, which is similar to the popular Harare-based ZimPraise, will be officially launched in August this year.
Power to Worship president, Hewitt Chigeza, 20, told the Daily News that the choir’s first album would be out by September.
“We hope our first album will be out in two months’ time. The various groups that joined hands to form Power to Worship will, however, continue to exist individually,” Chigeza said.
Chigeza added that the formation of Power to Worship was a result of a series of consultations.
“We would often perform together usually at the end of a show and it would come out nicely most of the time. This encouraged us to come up with a group representing Mutare.”
He added that Power to Worship, which has already mooted plans for national and regional tours, derives its strength from its ability to tackle different genres.
“For example I joined the group from a purely acapella group while others have a background in jazz, classic rhumba and several other genres,” Chigeza said.
The oldest member of Power to Worship is 27 while the youngest is 18 in the 40-strong group that has school pupils, college students, the unemployed and working professionals in its ranks.
“We are versatile and our main aim is to accommodate everyone across all age groups and denominations including various apostolic sects,” the group’s president said.
“We also want to expose local talent because there are many gifted young artistes here who often end up in Harare in pursuit of recognition.”
