BULAWAYO - Miss Environment Zimbabwe, a Bulawayo beauty pageant, will be re-launched in the city on Saturday after a two-year absence.
Pageant director Briaton Takundwa has promised a big and better event.
“The temporary break we were forced to take due to pressing issues that were beyond our control, gave us time to put our act together,” Takundwa told the Daily News.
“I am happy because this time around we have pressed the right baton and we promise a top-rate modelling stuff.”
Takundwa added that the pageant, which will be done in the City of Kings at a date to be announced, will feature at least 25 models drawn from all over the country who will compete in gowns made of recycled material.
“We removed the swim wear category in our competition because it is not in line with our cause as environmentalists,” he said.
According to the Miss Environment Zimbabwe pageant director, the winner of the event that will run under the theme “Environment Conversation through ICT,”will become an international ambassador for the pageant.
When the pageant was last held in 2012, Tshwane University student Nkanyeziyethu Malunga, who was 23 years old then, beat a bevy of 16 contestants to claim the title at a colourful and well-attended ceremony that was held at Horizon Pub in the city.
Former deputy prime minister Thokozani Khupe was the guest of honour at the event that was also attended by former Environment and Natural Resource Management minister Francis Nhema.
At next weekend’s re-launch of the pageant, Green for Life Consultancy, the organisers of the pageant, will honour volunteers who have supported the project since its inception.
The volunteers took part in several projects undertaken by Green for Life Consultancy that included tree planting, environmental campaigns, street cleaning and donations to the less privileged.
