HARARE - St Georges College is set to host the Conference for Heads of Independent Schools in Zimbabwe, (CHISZ) Soccer Tournament this Friday and Saturday.

This year, at least 13 schools will take part in the tournament which will kick off at 8am on both days.

The participating schools include the hosts, Gateway, Watershed College, St John’s College, Westridge, Peterhouse and Lomagundi College.

Hillcrest, Midlands Christian College, Goldridge, Falcon College, Kyle College and South Eastern College complete the list.

The tournament was staged in 2000 to try and nurture talent amongst boys attending Association of Trust Schools in Zimbabwe, well known as (ATS) schools.

The founder of the tournament, Ephraim Muswerakuenda, who is also a teacher at Lomagundi College, said that in the last 13 years, the tournament has been successful in “providing opportunities for competitively showcasing this talent and promoting tolerance and discipline through sport.”

The tournament which began with only four schools has grown into a formidable football festival attracting virtually all Chisz schools most of whom now offer the sport as part on their extra curriculum activities.

At the end of the tournament, a select team will be picked and it will represent Zimbabwe at the Independent Schools of Zambia tournament to be held in two weeks.

The head in charge of football at Chisz, Daniel Pswarai, who is also the Head of Midlands Christian College, said: ‘’Soccer in Chisz schools has grown incredibly over the past two years and this year’s tournament is another milestone in soccer development.

“We have secured sponsorship which makes the 2014 edition more promising and exciting. Parents/guardians and supporters are encouraged to come in large numbers to cheer the boys on.”
