KADOMA - Highlanders remained in pole position on the Castle Premiership log standings despite defeat away to Black Rhinos yesterday.
Lot Chiwunga scored the solitary strike seven minutes after the break and the Bulawayo giants never recovered after going behind.
Bosso are now tied on 32 points with How Mine and Dynamos but maintain pole position due to a superior goal difference.
Fourth-placed CAPS United, who are on 30 points with a game in hand, have a chance to go top if they can beat Hwange at the Colliery this afternoon.
Bosso will rue a number of missed chances in yesterday’s match after dominating the first half.
Knox Mutizwa should have given the Bulawayo giants the lead in the fifth minute but he failed to connect with a good cross from Bruce Kangwa.
Bosso continued to pile on the pressure but they could not break down the disciplined Rhinos defence.
After the breather, Bosso came back a more determined side looking for the opener but found Rhinos keeper Samuel Mafukidze in top form.
The reigning Goalkeeper of the Year thwarted a number of Highlanders attacks to keep his team in the match.
Five minutes after the break, Hilary Madzivanyika had a shot well-saved by the on fire goalie.
Moments later, the home side took the lead through Chiwunga’s strike.
After taking the lead, the home side retreated back allowing Bosso all the possession for the remainder of the half.
With Mafukidze playing the game of his life, the Bulawayo giants could not find a way back into the match.
There was moment when the entire Highlanders bench came off their sit thinking that Madzivanyika had found the equaliser but he was denied by Mafukidze.
In a bid to find an equaliser, Highlanders coach Kelvin Kaindu benched the returning Njabulo Ncube for Welcome Ndiweni.
The move nearly paid when Ndiweni’s effort missed the upright by a few inches.
After the match Black Rhinos coach Jostein Mathuthu was happy with the result.
“I’m very happy to collect maximum points from a great team like Highlanders and these points are valuable to us and now we are looking forward to the next match,”said Mathuthu.
Kaindu felt that his team had done enough to get a win and bemoaned the missed chances.
“We created more chances than Rhinos but we were not lucky enough to score.
“We can’t complain about the pitch because that is what is found in Africa.”
