Chitengwa wins Open Classic

HARARE - Wingate Golf Club attached golfer Farai Chitengwa kept a cool head to clinch his maiden Zambezi Tour win by one shot on Saturday at Chapman Golf Club.

The Tanzania Golf Union director had gone into the final round atop of the leaderboard having shot a well worked 70 but needed a composed 18th hole to seal the win ahead of second placed Roy da Costa.

Da Costa of Borrowdale Brooke Golf Club had shot a brilliant 69 to ensure he returned to the club house tied on two under par with Chitengwa.

Under pressure, Chitengwa went on to push his second into the greenside bunker and went up and down for birdie to win the event by one shot.

Chitengwa  dedicated the Open Classic win to his father Lewis Muridzo, a well renowned golf coach.

The local professional golfer pocketed $2000 for his effort whilst da Costa who settled for second took home $1300.

Robson Saurombe who started round two, just one shot off the pace, finished third a further shot behind with his scores of 71 and 72 seeing him gross one under par 143.

Borrowdale Brooke’s Ryan Lang who on day one had shot a level par 72 which featured a hole in one on number seven found the going tough on day two managing a 78 that took his tally to six over par 150
