HARARE - Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge finished tied for 41st place at the year’s final golf major the PGA Championship at a rain-softened Valhalla on Sunday.
Three weeks after failing to make the cut at The Open Championship at Hoylake in Liverpool, the Zimbabwean ended the PGA Championship on two-under 282.
Five other golfers - Koumei Oda, Luke Donald, Brian Harman, Ryan Moore and Jason Bohn were also on two-under at the end of play.
The highest-placed African on the leaderboard at Valhalla was veteran South Africa Ernie Els, who was tied for seventh place with Jimmy Walker, Victor Dubuisson, Steve Stricker, Mikko Ilonen and Hunter Mahan.
The Big Easy, a four-time major winner, carded a score of 11-under par for a gross total of 273, as he finished five strokes behind eventual winner Rory McIlroy.
Els was, however, not impressed with the organisers after a weather delay that rocked the 96th PGA Championship.
“The boys are a bit unhappy,” said the South African. “It could have been better organised. There were a lots of guys stuck out there on the course without transportation.
“Me and Jimmy Walker were on the 2nd hole and it was coming up to our ankles. The official told us to stay put but we crossed the fairway to get cover under the trees. Then when we heard the hooter, we just walked back.
“I was just talking with my caddie and [Rory McIlroy’s caddie] JP Fitzgerald; in all our combined years – and that’s a lot of years – we’ve never seen anything like it. You would have hoped common sense would have prevailed, particularly these days when there’s all kinds of technology available to track weather patterns.”
