MUTARE - A 30-year-old man’s decision to get back at his two assailants by filing a false robbery charge against them backfired after he was charged with perjury.

Archbald Mapfuva was yesterday fined $80 by magistrate Makamera Waini.

This was after he had made a false report that Darlington Mangwiro and Kuda Muzvidzwa had robbed him of $32 and a Huawei cellphone on August 10.

The two were arrested by Sakubva police officers and spent 22 hours in police cells before they were released on August 11.

It is the state’s case that Mapfuva of 229 Zororo, Sakubva was arrested on August 13 following further police investigations.

It is then that he confessed that the two had induced fear in him and he decided to lodge the robbery report in an attempt to get even.

Mapfuva showed Magistrate Waini a Band-Aid on top of this right eye which he said was proof of the beating he received from Mangwiro and Muzvidzwa.

He was convicted on his own guilty plea and sentenced to $80 fine or 30 days’ imprisonment.

Brian Goto was prosecuting.
