MUTARE - A 20-year-old divorcee has been convicted of having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Takudzwa Mutiyabo of Mundembe Village in Zimunya had been convicted on his own guilty plea by Mutare magistrate Annia Ndiraya on Wednesday.

He was sent for community service assessment but was yesterday denied the recommendation to do his sentence at a mixed primary school.

The magistrate said he must be kept away from young girls.

“Although you had been recommended for community service, I can’t trust you around young children considering the offence you have been convicted of,” Ndiraya said.

He was slapped with a $200 fine instead.

The fine is payable by October 30.

If he defaults, he will serve six months in jail.

It is the State’s case that the divorcee and father of one, slept with the minor for an unknown number of times from December 2013 until she eloped to him in July following promises of marriage.

The minor, who stays in a nearby village, eloped to Mutiyabo claiming that she was pregnant.

But her mother then looked for her and took her back.

She made a police report leading to Mutiyabo’s arrest this week.

Cuthbert Bhosha was prosecuting.
