MUTARE - A Mutare municipal employee was yesterday fined $20 for smoking marijuana.
Tinashe Mukandi of Dangamvura was convicted by Mutare magistrate Annia Ndiraya on his own plea of guilty.
The State led by Cuthbert Bosha said Mukandi was caught red handed with a smoldering stub of the drug.
Mukandi’s pleas for mercy at the beginning of his trial left the court in stitches after he claimed he only accepted the stub from someone else, on the presumption that it was gombototo (home treated tobacco).
The city council employee was arrested at Beta Shopping Centre in Dangamvura on August 20. He pleaded with the magistrate for leniency, saying he had not intended to smoke mbanje.
Cuthbert Bhosha was prosecuting.
