HARARE - Zimbabwe's Davis Cup tennis team has intensified preparation for the forthcoming Davis Cup Euro/Africa Zone Group III contest to be held in Cairo, Egypt, from September 8-13.

Martin Dzuwa captains the side which also has United States-based Takanyi Garanganga and Benjamin Lock alongside the Spain-based pair of Tinotenda Chanakira and Mark Fynn.

Tennis Zimbabwe administrator Cliff Nhokwara is confident the country will regain its status as one of the top Davis Cup playing nations in the world.

“I am happy that the players that have been picked have been taking part in various tournaments across the world thereby keeping them in shape ahead of this tournament,” Nhokwara told the Daily News yesterday.

Last year, Zimbabwe narrowly missed out on promotion into the Africa Zone Group II, losing to the hosts Egypt 2-1 in the semi-finals.

12 teams – Zimbabwe, Algeria, Benin, Congo, Botswana, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda and host Egypt will contest.

The teams will be split into two round-robin pools, with play-offs determining which two teams are promoted to the 2015 Davis Cup Euro/Africa Zone Group II competition.
