HARARE - Opposition National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) party has fielded candidates to contest the Harare and Zaka council by-elections scheduled for January 25.
NCA candidate Garikayi Takura will square off with Maureen Nyemba of Zanu PF, Albert Mponda of MDC and Jack Ethen Muzanenhamo who is standing as an independent candidate for Ward 12 in Harare.
The NCA is fielding Enock Chikamhi, who will be pitted against Elias Budi Mutava of the mainstream MDC and Togarepi Toruvanda of Zanu PF.
Rita Makarau, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) chairperson, said the vacancies have been caused by deaths since the July 31 vote.
She said council by-elections were due in Harare (Ward 12), Karoi Town Council (Ward 10) and Zaka Rural District Council (Ward 32).
“We are going to be holding three by-elections in Harare Province, Mashonaland West province and Masvingo province end of this month,” Makarau said.
“The by-elections were necessitated by the death of the councillors that had been elected and we were informed by the town clerks of the various council that vacancies had arisen in their various councils, which necessitated by- elections.”
In Karoi Town Council Ward 10 by-election, Solomon Chiwaya Musekiwa of the mainstream MDC will square off against Fortunate Madamombe of Zanu PF.
