HARARE - CAPS United’s Castle Premiership match with Bantu Rovers today is doubtful after players refused to travel to Bulawayo last night in protest over unpaid dues, with reports last night indicating the club’s entire board had quit.
Makepekepe were scheduled to depart for Bulawayo yesterday morning but refused to board the team bus demanding their outstanding salaries and bonuses.
Talks were fruitless later in the day and at time of going to press last night, the players were still in Harare.
Efforts to get a comment from club director Twine Phiri and team manager Luis Maio were fruitless as both their mobile phones where switched off.
United coach Taurai Mangwiro could also not shed light on the matter.
When contacted for comment yesterday afternoon at a time the team was supposed to be travelling to Bulawayo, Mangwiro simply said:
“I am at home. You should ask the executive.”
It is the second time this season CAPS players have resorted to industrial action after having also boycotted training earlier in the season.
The latest disturbances at CAPS could dent the Green Machine’s title charge that seemed to be on course after picking up three wins in their last five games.
United have this term launched a sustained title challenge since winning their last championship in 2005.
Before yesterday’s round of matches United were in fourth place, just two points behind log leaders Dynamos.
Unconfirmed reports also claimed the club’s board, appointed by Phiri earlier this season, had quit over “the manner the club was run.”
This follows the resignation two months ago of board member Lewis Uriri.
