EDITOR — Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (RTUZ) would like to applaud the concerted efforts by Members of Parliament who moved a motion concerning the rot in the education sector.
RTUZ would like to extend its gratitude to the efforts by Joseph Chinotimba, Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga and Settlement Chikwinya among other MPs in ensuring that the teaching profession and the education sector regain their status.
RTUZ hopes that our dear minister of Primary and Secondary Education will take heed of advice from the presentations of the aforementioned MPs. The spirited efforts by the aforementioned MPs despite different political backgrounds in castigating devilish policies in the education sector should be embraced by every Zimbabwean who cares about the development and the future of our children.
RTUZ would also like to salute the unparalleled efforts by a private local daily in covering the marginalised groups and telling the untold stories of the pathetic state of the education sector.
It is our hope that the so-called State media prioritise quintessential issues like education and development instead of fanning hate speech and parochial partisan politics.
It is also lamentable that the government and some quarters of the Fourth Estate deliberately choose to focus on trivial and unnecessary issues like the Baba Jukwa case and the MDC splits instead of focusing on issues which have a bearing on the lives of ordinary citizens.
Shockingly enough, schools will reopen next week yet the very same issues that the teachers raised at the beginning of the year are still to be addressed.
It is high time that every Zimbabwean focuses on developmental issues like education, health and children’s rights instead of concentrating on partisan bickering fuelled by a polarised media.
