HARARE - Zimbabwe Davis Cup team will be hoping to continue with their fine start when they face Nigeria in the 2014 Davis Cup Euro/Africa Zone Group III match at Smash Tennis Academy in Cairo, Egypt today.
The Zimbabwe team begin their quest to qualify for 2015 Davis Cup Euro/Africa Zone Group II on a positive note after beating Angola 3-0 on Monday.
Zimbabwe’s Benjamin Lock outclassed Armel Mokobo 6-1, 6-0, before Tinotenda Chanakira walloped Angola’s Pagnol Madzou 6-0, 6-0 to won the singles with a 2-0 score margin.
Chanakira combined with Mark Fynn to post a straight convincing win against Mokobo and Madzou 6-0, 6-0 to seal Zimbabwe’s 3-0 victory.
Today, Zimbabwe will pin their hopes on Takanyi Garanganga, who is the third highest ranked African on the ATP Tour.
Garanganga was rested for their first encounter against Angola and is likely to inspire the team to continue with their fine start today.
Zimbabwe are currently ranked above Nigeria on Davis Cup rankings, they are on position 81 while Nigeria are on position 100.
Last year, Zimbabwe narrowly missed out on promotion into the Africa Zone Group II, losing to the hosts Egypt 2-1 in the play-offs and they will be hoping to bring back the good old days.
Martin Dzuwa’s team is battling it out in Pool A against, Congo, Madagascar and Nigeria.
Algeria, Botswana, Benin, Mozambique and Namibia are battling for honours in group B.
The two winning countries will be promoted to Europe/Africa Zone Group II for 2015.
