Nyathi makes song milestone

HARARE - Musician-cum-dub poet Albert Nyathi and his Imbongi crew will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the hit song Senzeni Na at the Book Café tonight.

Nyathi will be supported by a number of guest artistes from different cultures, languages and dialects spoken in the country including Kalanga, Tonga, Venda, Xhosa, Shona, Sotho, Nambia, Ndebele and English .The guest artistes will include jazz star Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana who did the lead vocals on Senzeni Na two decades ago.

Nyathi who wrote Senzeni Na in 1993 following the assassination of South African nationalist Chris Hani. When the song was recorded and released two decades ago it also featured   Mathew ‘Mateo’ Kaunda, Muzi Mangena, Albert Nyathi himself, the late Douglas Domingo (bass), Thomas Domingo (rhythm), and David Domingo (lead guitar), Moses Bhekizulu Kabubi (keyboards) and David Moyo (drums).

Also at the Book Café tonight, mbira groups Madendera Kumabvazuva and Madhonza Makuru will perform in a concert meant to celebrate mbira month.

Tomorrow afternoon, the same venue will host the Sistaz Open Mic where young women artistes will showcase their talents in song, dance, poetry and comedy and other disciplines.

The Sistaz Open Mic after party will feature Edith WeUtonga, Rute Mbangwa, Tina Watyoka and arguably the youngest mbira recording artiste, Tendai Mavengeni.

The Sistaz Open Mic will be followed by a dancehall concert featuring Dadza D, Hotta Fire and Seh Calaz.
