HARARE - A police officer has been ordered to pay maintenance for his child in a default judgment after he failed to turn up for his court hearing.

This happened after Sammuel Chinofunga failed to pitch up for his hearing after signing the return of service papers which shows that he knew that he was wanted at the Harare Civil Court.

Chinofunga was ordered to pay $160 for the upkeep of his one-year-old child.

His wife, Memory Makumbire, who is also a police officer, told magistrate Rekina Dzikiti that Chinofunga earns more money than her.

“He is a police officer and earns $450,” Makumbire said.

“I want $160 and the money includes the maid’s salary because I am also employed as a police officer and spend most of my time at work.

“The child also needs a monthly medical check-up of which costs about $60,” she added.

Magistrate Dzikiti granted a default judgment and ordered Chinofunga to pay $160 for the upkeep of their child.
