HARARE - Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU)’s Vice Chancellor Primrose Kurasha was last week crowned Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) businesswoman of the year while the late property mogul Sammy Levy’s son, Serge, walked away with the businessman of the year accolade.
Kurasha, who has been at the helm of the university since 2003, was rewarded for making ZOU one of the best competitive academic institutions in the region.

Maiwepi Jiti of Yardfarm was crowned first runner-up in the women’s category of the ZNCC Harare chapter awards.
The glittering event, held in the capital last week, saw Tiger Wheel and Tyre Zimbabwe’s Rishi Magecha losing narrowly to Levy while Hillbright Investments director Pardon Mugari was the second runner-up.
Standards Association of Zimbabwe boss Eve Gadzikwa was crowned corporate manager of the year as Jiti, owner of tobacco business Yardfarm company was named rural businessperson of the year.
Astro Mobile Zimbabwe founder Munyaradzi Gwatidzo was awarded the young businessman of the year award while Cyrex Business’ Wisdom Gakaka and Pro Air Conditioning’s George Munengwa were pronounced first and second runner-up.
Innscor Africa’s Padenga Holdings was named best and most improved exporter in the agriculture category with Lake Harvest Aquaculture being crowned first runner-up with Cotton Company of Zimbabwe clinching the second runner-up position.
The most improved exporter of the year award in agriculture went to Unified Agricultural Processes International.
Zimbabwe Flower Exports clinched the best horticulture company award followed by Lornho Fresh Exports and Lavante Trading. In this category, Kamina Kawena was named most improved exporter of the year.
In the hunting section, Chipitani Safari was named best and most improved exporter followed by Safari Air Services.
Grafax Holdings was named best manufacturing company of the year followed by Afrochine Smelting and Zimasco with Paramount exports being named most improved exporter of the year.
While tobacco company, Fodya was named Harare branch’s most improved exporter of the year, Tian Ze Tobacco Company was crowned best tobacco company with the Zimbabwe Leaf and Mashonaland Tobacco Company respectively being crowned first and second runner up.
In mining, central bank subsidiary Fidelity Printers and refiners was crowned best and most improved exporter as Zimbabwe Platinum Mines(Zimplats) walked away the first runner up followed by Mimosa.
Anglo American Platinum’s Unki mine was named the most improved exporter of the year in the mining category.
In the Corporate social responsibility-cancer awareness Mimosa Mining Company was the first runner up as Nyaradzo Funeral Assurance walked away with the award.
Zimplats, walked away with the Corporate Social Responsibility-HIV and Aids award with the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company coming second as Northern Tobacco was honoured as second runner up.
Eagleliner Coaches was crowned best transporter and logistics company of the year as ABC Auctions walked away first runner-up in the lifetime achievement award, with retailer N Richards wining the lifetime business gong.
Bindura University of Science Education was crowned best tertiary institution of the year as Chinhoyi University of Technology and ZOU were first and second runner-up respectively.
State-owned Telone was crowned best public enterprise of the year with Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (Econet) being awarded the investor of the year award seconded by retailer N Richards.
Econet subsidiary Liquid Telecom won the best ICT Company of the year award seconded by Southern Region Trading Company and internet solutions group ZOL Zimbabwe.
Retailer N Richards also won the enterprise development support award.
The country’s biggest bank by assets, CBZ Bank was crowned best bank supporting small-to-medium enterprises (SME) as ZB Bank and Cabs came out first and second runner up respectively.
Paints solutions group, Nash Paints, was named SME of the year as Snow White Laundry and Dry Cleaners and Zimlabs emerged first and second runner up.
