It will be staged at number 9, York Road, Greendale in Harare on 16 and 17 July.

The play is to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

Shakespeare remains one of the world’s greatest playwrights, unrivalled for his language, and his insights into love, grief, jealousy and humanity in general.

His many plays, including Othello, King Henry IV, Macbeth, Rome and Juliet among others have been studied as high school literature set books.

Much Ado About Nothing has witty exchanges between men and women, hopeless and pompous policemen, two love stories, a cruel plot and (in this version) plenty of 1960s music.

“This is my first Shakespeare production and I am really excited. There was a time when Almasi Collaborative Arts held demystifying Shakespeare but I was not around.

“I am so excited as I was one of the actresses who was afraid of taking up a role in Shakespearean plays. People should expect the usual world-class performance from me,” she said.

Chidawanyika- Goliath said she is also excited about the 1960s theme.

“The costumes and music are based in the 1960s and that is really exciting. We have a diverse cast from 13-66 years old, experienced and rookie actors as well.

“We are trying to create an appreciation of theatre in people as most do not really come out to watch theatre plays,” she said.

The English playwright left a legacy so huge that 400 years on, people are still celebrating his works.

The British Council, in partnership with British Embassy in Zimbabwe, are implementing the Shakespeare project in five cities.

The aim of the project is to celebrate his life through arts, education and social activities while showcasing the best of UK through digital arts, literature and education materials.

Key activities include #PlayYourPart, an opportunity to engage and share Shakespeare moments through social media platforms, film screenings and the introduction of the Shakespeare Educational pack for schools.
