HARARE - Tryson and Suluman Chimbetu will participate in a memorial gig in honour of late dendera music icon Naison Chimbetu set for next month in the Harare Gardens.
The duo who have in the past traded barbs in the media, will share the stage with some of Zimbabwe’s top musicians who include sungura kingpin Alick Macheso, gospel stars Charles and Olivia Charamba, Romeo Gasa and Simon Mutambi during the April 6 concert.
Biggie Chinoperekwei, the promoter of the memorial gig, told the Daily News yesterday that the second edition of the Dr Nero Commemoration will feature Allan Chimbetu and his son Douglas.
Allan is the only surviving brother of the late Naison Chimbetu who passed away in 2006.
Unlike in the past, Chinoperekwei claims that the Chimbetu family is approaching the memorial gig with a sense of unity.
“All is set for the event and I have been humbled by the level of maturity the Chimbetus are showing this time around.
“Everything is moving smoothly unlike in previous years,” said Chinoperekwei who is the current National Arts Merit Award (Nama) promoter of the year.
The promoter’s views on the Chimbetus seem to give credence to recent reports that Tryson will feature on Suluman’s forthcoming album to be released next month.
Dr Nero, whose first commemorative gig was held last year on March 22 at Andy Miller Hall, is credited for the role he played in creating dendera music alongside his late brother Simon.
Like his brother Simon, Naison was a talented vocalist, guitarist and song writer.
The Dr Nero star teamed up with his siblings who included Simon (late), Briam (late) and Allan to create the legendary Orchestra Dendera Kings before he quit to form his own outfit called Great 7 Commandos.
