HARARE - Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday defended deputy Foreign Affairs minister Christopher Mutsvangwa, saying it was his democratic right to attack his boss Simbarashe Mumbengegwi.
Speaking on a ZiFM talk show on Monday evening, Mutsvangwa accused Mumbengegwi and Joey Bimha, the Foreign Affairs permanent secretary, of putting the First Lady Grace Mugabe in an embarrassing situation where she was denied a visa to attend the EU-Africa summit that commenced in Belgium yesterday.
Responding to a question raised by Kuwadzana East MDC MP Nelson Chamisa in Parliament during ministers’ question time whether there was a government fallout between the two ministers over the matter, Mnangagwa said: “It is his democratic right to ask such a question. People should be allowed to air their opinions and there is government unity and the centre is still holding. You are a member of the MDC which speaks of democracy, this is part of it.”
Mutsvangwa said Mumbengegwi excluded him in the decision to forward the First Lady’s visa to the Belgian Embassy without doing enough exploratory work using diplomatic channels.
