HARARE - The decision by the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) board to rescind acting chief executive officer Allan Chiweshe’s reassignment of managers at the State broadcaster was arrived at without prior knowledge of the ministry.

This was said by Information minister Jonathan Moyo when he officially launched the Information and Media Panel of Inquiry (IMPI) in Harare yesterday.

He said his ministry had merely received communication from the ZBC board informing them of the decision without consultation.

“Did the ministry know about this? No we didn’t know,” Moyo said. “We also read about it in the Press. I have to be honest as we were reading about it in the Press, we were also receiving letters from ZBC, not consulting with us, but informing us that they had taken that decision.

“Again this is bad corporate governance. We don’t want to have a situation that even those with oversight are surprised by the decisions and so forth. Does this mean the decision was necessarily bad?

“I haven’t had time to think about that. I don’t think that is the issue. The issue is that no proper corporate governance process has been observed in this case and going forward we would like to see the media that is part of structure that we oversee, following procedure that reflect good corporate governance.”
