HARARE – Basking in double-title glory, Manicaland Mountaineers coach Gary Brent has revealed his desire to scale up the ladder in Zimbabwe Cricket.
The Goats made it a double after winning the Pro 50 Championship at their fortress, Mutare Sports Club, on Wednesday. The Tino Mawoyo-captained side dismissed Southern Rocks by seven wickets buoyed by seamer Tendai Chatara’s four wickets for 37 runs in 8.3 overs and Timycen Maruma’s unbeaten 69 runs.
Apart from coaching Mountaineers, Brent was appointed academy coach last year when ZC tried to revive the project and he says he is now looking at “more than just being a franchise coach.”
Mid-way into the just-ended season, Brent, frustrated by non-payment of salaries that led to the player-boycott, tendered his resignation. He had to be lured out of resignation by the Mountaineers franchise chief executive, John Brent.
“It was an issue that had nothing to do with the franchise at all,” Brent tells the Daily News.
“There’s restructuring going on at Zimbabwe Cricket right now and we’ll see what happens because I also got aspirations of not just being a franchise coach.”
Turning to the current season, Brent said, “We made great strides to win the Logan Cup and the Pro-50 final, I thought it was an excellent all-round effort from the lads and the support we got from the franchise was just awesome.”
