HARARE - The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) has been summoned to appear before a parliamentary portfolio   committee on Education, Sport, Arts and Culture to give oral evidence on their programmes to spread the game to other areas.

The committee is chaired by Zanu PF MP for Hurungwe Temba Mliswa and the hearing will take place tomorrow.

The hearing comes in the wake of the Sables failing to gain an automatic ticket to qualify for next year’s IRB Rugby World Cup in England.

The Sables agonisingly came second at the Africa Cup A1 tournament that ended in Madagascar last weekend behind Namibia.

After a gallant display to beat an organised Kenyan side 28-10 on Sunday, the Sables hopes were dashed by Namibia, who went on to massacre hosts Madagascar 89-10 later in the day to earn automatic qualification.

After the Sables failed to beat Kenya with a bonus point, a Namibia’s huge victory against the hosts ensured that the Welwitschias topped the standing only on point difference.

After coming second, the Sables now have a more difficult path to qualify for next year’s Rugby World Cup.

Zimbabwe now have to travel to Siberia to play Russia in a playoff match on August 2 where the winners will face a home and away series against the winner of the play off between Uruguay and Hong Kong.
