HARARE - Newly formed Boxers Union of Zimbabwe (Buz) has written to the Sports minister Andrew Langa and the Sports Recreation Commission (SRC) seeking authority to kick-start its operations.

In a letter dated June 30, Buz secretary- general, Simon Sankulani, outlined his association’s goal in relation to local boxing.

“The newly formed BUZ is seeking your authority to be allowed to operate freely as we are trying to put down some mechanism to push boxing to new level,” the letter read.

“We will operate as a pressure group to both leaders of boxing, amateur and professionals, but as an independent (eyes).

“For boxing to be well alive in any country the amateur ranks have to be operating above average levels and we have to give a wakeup call to the amateur federation.”

Boxing is momentarily governed under an Act of Parliament, which was gazetted in 1957 and was last reviewed in 1979.

Buz feels that there is need to move towards modern trends that will help the sport attract sponsorship.

Currently, local boxers are surviving by looking for fights outside the country in places like Zambia, Namibia and South Africa.

Local promoters are failing to hosts tournaments and on the rare occasions that they are able to organise an event, the boxers’ purse is very little.
