HARARE - Leading joker Simba the Comic King says a comedy series featuring some of Zimbabwe’s best comedians will be launched on Africa Magic, Comedy Central and Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation in December.
Dubbed ZimComedyLive, the project, the brainchild of Simba the Comic King, will be produced and directed by renowned director Joe Njagu.
Simba the Comic King, whose real name is Simbarashe Kakora, is confident that the comedy series will put Zimbabwean jesters on the global map.
“ZimComedyLive will feature pretty much all the top comedians in Zimbabwe, the likes of Carl Ncube, Michael K, Doc Vikela, Q, Cde Fasto and South Africa-based Zimbabwean comedians Farhan Esat, Andrew Manyika, Chik Aljoy as well as the new talent”, he said.
The hilarious comic added that top African comedians on the continent achieved their success by making their work accessible on television.
“ZimComedyLive was inspired by the realisation that stand-up comedy became popular in countries like Uganda, Nigeria and South Africa when comedians took their comedy out of bars straight to a bigger mass audience through television and radio,” Simba the Comic King told the Daily News.
“We are excited because the show will reach a larger audience as it is set to air in December simultaneously on Africa Magic, Comedy Central and our own local broadcaster ZBC”.
The Nama winner said 12 episodes of the comedy will be ready to be aired by December.
“Each episode will be 24 minutes long and will feature three comedians who only have five minutes and thirty seconds slots to make the audience laugh,” said Simba the Comic King.
Simba the Comic King, who will be the host on the series, said filming of the project commenced in April this year and is close to being finalised.
Currently, ZimComedyLive is featuring the country’s top stand-up comedians who are ready to make the audience laugh at The Grain Lounge Bar in Harare’s Newlands Suburb every Saturday.
