HARARE - Sungura “king” Alick Macheso, whose latest album Kwatabva Mitunhu (Kure kwekure) has been described by several critics as his worst ever, claimed the top and fifth positions in the 2013 Radio Zimbabwe Coca Cola Top 50.
Macheso’s hit song Macharangwanda, which also topped the 2013 National FM’s top 50, beat second-placed Suluman Chimbetu’s Sean Timba by 175 votes to claim $1 200 and a Coca Cola hamper.
The singer also underlined his dominance through his hit Cynthia which garnered fifth position.
For coming second, Suluman walked away with $800 and a hamper.
Jah Prayzah, who won the 2012 Radio Zimbabwe Coca Cola Top 50 and became the first artiste ever to have five songs in the competition only managed third position this time around.
The dreadlocked singer’s Tsviriyo got the third highest number of votes and as a result earned him $500 and a hamper.
Interestingly, Tsviriyo was number two in the 2013 National FM Top 50.
Music legend Oliver Mtukudzi, a dominant force on the Zimbabwean music scene for the past four decades, claimed the fourth slot via his hit Watitsvata.
Peter “Young Igwe” Moyo, who released his debut album Mushonga Mukuru last year, was rewarded by Zimbabwean music fans who voted his track Mira Newako into sixth place.
Gospel music was fairly represented in the 2013 Radio Zimbabwe Coca Cola Top 50.
Trailblazing gospel choir Zimpraise’s Sungano was number seven while Mathias Mhere’s hit Favour landed position eight.
Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave’s Kwedu KuZimbabwe was number nine.
Last year proved to be a successful debut year for ex-Macheso band members Extra Kwazvose whose track Gurajena got the tenth position in the Coca Cola Top 50 and position number two in the National FM Top 50.
Ninja President Winky D was dancehall’s shining star on the charts.
The controversial hit Mafirakureva was number 15 in the Coca Cola Top 50 and number five in the National FM Top 50.
The next best placed dancehall hit was Shinsoman’s Mawaya-waya which landed position 35.
The Coca Cola Top 50 was decided by listeners who texted through their choices with those who predicted the winners correctly winning a variety of prizes ranging from LED and LCD 40-inch television sets and JVC radios.
