HARARE - Zimbabwe's top tennis player Takanyi Garanganga progressed to the second round of the on-going Senegal F1 Futures with a victory over Henrique Sousa from Portugal.
Garanganga maintain his fine run by dismantling Sousa 6-4 6-0 at Olympique Club storm into the second round.
The Zimbabwe Davis Cup player will now face Benin’s Alexis Klegou, who struggled to overcome Libor Salaba from the Czech Republic 3-6 7-6(4) 6-2 in the first round.
Other Zimbabwe representatives, Mark Fynn and Tinotenda Chanakira, failed to live up to expectations after they were booted out in the first round.
Fynn’s brilliant run in Futures tournaments was brought to an end with a 3-6, 6-3 6-2 loss to Austrian Maximilian Neuchrist while Chanakira suffered a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Damon Gooch of South Africa.
Last month, Garanganga sealed his fifth career win on the ITF Futures Circuit with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Michal Konecny of the Czech Republic.
It was also Garanganga’s third win in Turkey in a space of two years in addition to the Turkey F24 Futures in June and the Turkey Futures 35 and 36 tournaments both staged in the same country last year.
Garanganga, who is ranked 501 on the ATP World rankings, is also the reigning 23rd Century Systems Zimbabwe F1 Futures champion.
ITF Futures tournaments are the lowest rung in professional tennis and are organised by the ITF Men’s Circuit to create a platform for players to win career titles and improve their world rankings.
